It’s often said that just one person can make a difference.  The children and families impacted by the work of Sue Duncan know this to be true first-hand!  Each year, CNN shines a spotlight on “everyday people changing the world” through the CNN HEROES AWARD.  Hands down, Sue deserves to be a CNN HERO!

Sue Duncan’s unwavering commitment to doing whatever it takes to help children reach their full potential through education is legendary.  Since the early days of her driving through the neighborhood in her blue suburban picking up children block-by-block to take them to the Center, Sue’s belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed and the resources to make it possible has created an oasis in one of Chicago’s most impoverished neighborhoods.  The Sue Duncan Children’s Center is a safe-haven that provides a space where all children are given the opportunity to discover a love of learning and encouraged to be intellectually curious through artistic, athletic and academic programming.

Sue’s selflessness and genuine desire to be a positive influence began with teaching a handful of children to read in a church basement in 1961 and blossomed into a quiet, yet monumental movement of achievement against all odds.  Thousands of children have exceeded expectations and families spanning several generations have been transformed by Sue’s dedication to education.  Her students credit her for being a turning point in their lives and are now making significant contributions to society as engineers, doctors, lawyers, educators, philanthropists, police officers, fire fighters, servicemen and women, well-known athletes, actors, and musicians, community leaders and business owners.

Even in her recent retirement, and despite some memory loss, Sue can be found at the Center passing out gifts to children during the holidays.  She still does not hesitate to remind each child of the importance of giving and showing gratitude when on the receiving end.  Now well in her 70s, using every opportunity to educate a child in her presence continues to be Sue’s life’s work.  The Sue Duncan Children’s Center continues thrive thanks to the legacy of learning she created.
