| continued ® Owen, in addition to leading a group for all older youth, has begun a boys youth program aimed at teaching anger management techniques, which is currently focusing on meditation. Erin runs a pre-teen girls group and started up a conversational Spanish group with seven of the children. Further, an improv group from the University of Chicago is providing us with weekly comedic theater and children are learning chess from parent volunteers. Meanwhile, Sue continues to run a group for the older kids in which they discuss issues pertinent in their lives, write stories, and learn about various worldly issues. All of this brings great energy to the Center and many moments of growth and accomplishment for the children! | |

Partnership Spotlight: Rock for Reading
Rock for Reading is a Chicago-based
organization with the mission to fight the rising trend of illiteracy
and renew interest in reading. Their goal is provide communities with
the tools and incentives that they need to experience the joy of
reading. Rock for Reading, through generous financial support and book
donations, has indeed helped to spread the joy of reading amongst the
children attending the Center. The children and staff have also
greatly appreciated and enjoyed Alice and Hugh’s visits and the music
Alice provides. This year, we will utilize their book donation to help
launch our summer reading program. Further, a part of their monetary
grant has allowed the Center to hire 3 teenagers during the summer
months who will help guide reading groups and provide individualized
tutoring to the younger children.
