Excerpt from Jasmine’s Santa letter:

Jasmine, 13, opens her gift at the 2009 party.

My name is Jasmine. I just turned 13 and I love it. I’m in the 8th grade and I’m having fun being in the 8th grade. I live with my great, great grandma. Being in the 8th grade is a lot of work, but I can handle it. Sometimes things can be difficult and hard to understand, but I still find a way to get through it. Have a very hard and strict teacher, but she is someone who cares and helps me get through things. My favorite subjects are reading and writing. I like these subjects because one day I want to become a writer and you need to know how to read and write in order to become a writer. Bet you didn’t know that I’m a fantastic writer. In my spare time I like to help around the community just to show my neighbors and my family I appreciate living there.

Excerpt from Dermarest’s Santa letter:

How are you doing? Is your wife doing well? Do you have children, Santa? How are the reindeer doing? Are your elves doing well too? What types of toys are they making this year? Is your grandmother doing well? How long do you have to fly on Christmas Eve? Did you ever see a whale before up there in the Arctic?

My name is Dermarest. I go to Jackie Robinson School. I am in third grade. I am going to go to college to be a lawyer. I wanted to be a paleontologist, but I changed my mind.

Many thanks to all who attended Fall Fête and donated time and money to make this year’s event successful. With your support, we raised over $60,000 to support the Center. All event profits directly support the Center’s operations where children receive top-level academic tutoring and social learning. We are proud of the Center’s results for the last marking period of the 2009 school year –- 100% of students had passing grades, and 76% of students had A and B grades after attending the Center for at least one year.


We feel that education breaks the cycle of poverty and empowers students to be productive citizens who contribute to our community. As Arne Duncan so honestly stated in his speech at the event, “I can’t tell you how important the lessons of the Sue Duncan Children’s Center are for the entire country. If every child had the kind of structure, the kind of support, and the kind of high expectations the children there receive everyday, our country would be in a much, much better place.” We agree.

The Center is off to a busy start for the 2010 school year, and like the past few years the Center is at capacity. We look forward to providing you updates on this school year as we make progress. Next year marks the Center’s 50th anniversary and we’ve got big ideas and big plans. Stay tuned for future communications regarding events and celebrations!

The event featured this video, produced by one of the graduates, Serenity, along with speeches written by current high schoolers Jasmine and Humu, a poem by 8th grader Sherron, and a rap by our tutor, Nate. The students received balloons, flowers and a Borders gift certificate. Congratulations everyone!

Many thanks to all of those who attended Fall Fête and donated their time and money to make this year’s event so successful. As Owen Duncan said of the evening: “not only is the annual event crucial financially, it is emotionally and spiritually revitalizing for Sue and the rest of the staff at the Center.”

With your support, we raised nearly $90,000 to support the Center, a great start as we continue working to meet our needs for the coming years. You heard from Arne Duncan about the way the Center has shaped his view of education, and from Center alum Ron Raglin about how deeply Sue touched the lives of several generations.

The beginning of the 2009 school year has been our busiest ever and the Foundation Board will continue to work hard with your support to fund our critical needs. We encourage you to sign up for our online mailing list or Facebook group and visit our website. We look forward to providing you updates on this school year as we make progress.
