A SHORT DOCUMENTARY Melina Kolb, who has been a tutor at the Children's Center for the past four years, recently graduated one quarter early from University of Chicago. Mel has joined the SDCC staff — her staff position is funded by a grant from "Rock for Reading". Mel put together a 10-minute documentary (now viewable on CurrentTV) about the Center, and we're in preliminary discussions with her about the possibility of creating a longer (50min) video giving a more in-depth look at the Center and chronicling its lengthy history. |

THE PROGRAM The daily program, run Monday through Thursday at Jackie Robinson School, begins at 2:30 with homework help, beginning reading groups, computer projects and other academic activities. Sue runs a group for younger children while Owen focuses on the older children. A meal is served at 4:15 and the older group convenes from 4:45-5:45 while the younger children settle into art projects or being read to by adults. At 5:45 everyone goes down to the gymnasium for basketball, rollerblading, jumping rope etc. At 6:30, the children head home: well-fed, exercised and better educated than before! THANK YOU! |
